Downtown Bar Harbor in Winter

Downtown Bar Harbor takes on a special kind of charm in winter, when the crowds thin, the ocean air feels crisp, and the village settles into a peaceful coastal rhythm. Stroll tree-lined streets dusted with snow, browse local shops and galleries at a slower pace, and stop into cafés serving hot drinks and homemade treats. Many restaurants rotate their winter hours, creating a cozy, intimate dining scene perfect for savoring chowder, craft beer, or comfort food after a chilly walk.

Holiday Shopping, Pajama-Style

Early Bird Pajama Sale

Every November, Bar Harbor wakes up early—and stays in their pajamas—for one of the town’s quirkiest and most beloved winter traditions. During the Early Bird Pajama Sale, more than 30 local shops open their doors with incredible holiday deals, and the whole town strolls the streets in slippers, robes, and flannel. It’s festive, it’s fun, and it’s a uniquely Bar Harbor way to kick off the season of giving while supporting local businesses.

Mount Desert Island Bed Races

By mid-morning on the same day as the Earl Bird Pajama Sale, the winter fun shifts into high gear with the Mount Desert Island Bed Races. Local businesses and community groups build and decorate rolling bed frames—some looking more like parade floats than furniture—and race them through downtown while pajama-clad spectators cheer from the sidewalks. It’s hilarious, high-energy, and one of the most unforgettable traditions on the island.

Village Holidays & Santa's Visit

Early December brings another treasured event: Village Holidays. Santa makes a cheerful appearance, neighbors gather for free hot cocoa, and the YMCA hosts family-friendly crafts like ornament decorating and cookie making. As the sun dips low, the town tree lighting fills downtown with a soft winter glow. It’s a cozy, heartwarming celebration that captures the spirit of Bar Harbor’s close-knit community.
